Movie Conventions Blog: Spiderhead

Movie: Spiderhead (2022)  1.  What conventions of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does the movie have? Our final task is going to be in the thriller genre, and so Spiderhead, a sci-fi/thriller, has many conventions of a thriller. These conventions are clues, editing, low-key lighting, mis-en-scene, praise in the protagonist, and crime. Clues are seen mostly through Jeff, but at times through Steve and Verlaine. Editing is seen at the beginning and end of the movie in the opening scene and when things start to get chaotic. Low-key lighting and mis-en-scene is seen throughout the whole movie, as it is something that really ties together the aspect of a thriller. Crime is the base of the plot as to why all the characters are being tested in the first place, and this helps tie in the praise of the protagonist, Steve Abnesti, who freed all the charcters from prison and brought them to this private, secluded land. 2.  What conventions of the genre did the movie have the y

Movie: Don’t Worry Darling (2022) 1. What conventions of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?     Our genre, thriller, contains conventions that signal the reader they are in for a suspenseful film. Some of these include close-ups of characters' faces and quick cuts, both of which were seen in the film. The close-ups help to display clearly the change in emotion the actor portrays during an event. This is especially important within this genre of thriller as a lot of the time, we learn sinister details through what a character is discovering. Quick cuts on the other hand set a fast and engaging pace during action. Black and white scenes created by editing is another part of thriller films. This aspect was used in the film to enhance emotion and low lighting. Even to enact fear in the viewer.  2. What conventions of the genre did the movie have that you liked?      Some of my personal favorite aspects of the film Don't Worry Darling include

Movie: The Killer (2023) 1. What conventions of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does the movie have? The movie “The Killer” uses many conventions of the thriller genre, including multiple different types of angles, such as high angles, low angles, and eye-level angles. The types of shots in this movie include: full body, medium shot, over the shoulder, close-up, bird’s eye view, wide shot, etc. It uses “suspense music” (sound motif), diegetic sound, and ambient sound. The editing includes fade in/ fade out, transitions, insert, etc. The mis-en-scene in this movie varies, but generally includes natural makeup and casual clothing, and dim lighting when inside buildings.  2. What conventions of the genre did the movie have the you like? We liked many conventions of the genre that the movie did. We plan on using fully body shots, wide shots, medium shots, and over the shoulder shots. These shots are great at displaying a setting while something is happening, and will

Genre: Comedy  Common camera angles, movement, and shots:  - wide shots - close-up -low angle  A type of cams used in comedy films are wide shots. They are used to capture the whole scene and incorporate every element including characters, and the environment into the shot. They also provide the ability to show visual gags, reveal funny situations, and showcase physical comedy. Another type of cam is a close-up. Close-ups reveal facial expressions, reactions, and nuances that contribute to comedic timing and deliver. Lastly, another type of angle is a low angle. This helps employ the effects of comedic effects, making characters appear larger than life, and emphasizing physical comedy.  Common mis-en-scene:  - exaggerated costumes - props for physical comedy Some mis-en-scenes that are used are exaggerated costumes. Exaggerated costumes can enhance physical comedy and contribute to the visual humor of the characters. Lastly, there can be props for physical comedy. Cleverly chosen and

Genre Decision Blog

Image
For our group's final decision, we went with thriller. After careful consideration and researching many movies, we feel this is the best option for our plot. Our opening scene is meant to thrill our audience so that they'll be engaged throughout the rest of the movie. We have an idea as to how we want our opening scene to look, and this genre encapsulates it the most. As a group, we watched movies together and spoke about and paid close attention to details we did and didn't like. We covered mis-en-scene, editing, shots, sound, angles, and movement. We loved not only how a thriller made us feel, but how it looked as well.

Time to Pick Which Pitch

Image
Pitch A: Two thought-to-be strangers meet, except one knows the other too well and seeks revenge on their new found half-sibling.  Pitch B: Friends drug a girl to humiliate her, but when she goes missing, their guilt leads them on a mission to find her.  Discuss Pitch A: Valentina had an idea for an opening sequence in which we follow the stalkee's day, with the voiceover of the stalker. This would lead the audience to believe the main character is the stalkee's, creating a huge plot twist when the stalker is revealed at the end of the sequence. Charlize suggested the idea that the stalker is a girl who's father left her at a young age to create a new family. When the girl grows up, she finds her half-sibling and stalks her with an intent to kill. The girls become "friends", but will they ever be family? Discuss Pitch B: This idea came to life when Sabrina was thinking of common occurrences that we can portray through film. We wanted to start with a party scene to

Group Blog: We're Back Again!

Did you miss us? Yes, us. Surprise surprise! For this final project I will be working with Valentina and Sabrina.  While there was some obstacles last time, we all understand that we are hardworking students who would've made a great group if it weren't for some obstacles. (Fingers crossed no one almost dies this time around.) So we're giving our group a redemption round. It goes without saying though that with last project's challenges, we still made an exceptional group. I chose to stay with this group because we are all striving for an A on our AICE exam. And we know that together we can truly get that. We know how important this project is, considering it's 50% of our AICE exam. We also know that out of everyone we know in the media studies classes, we three would work really well together. I'm super excited for this project since we'll be creating the opening sequence of a movie. Our group is very creative and we flow with ideas and I'm sure we'

Hey, Sappies, it's Char. And today, I have a little intro for you. Again.           Now, wh ile I am more than sure that you'd love to hear of all the juicy scandals coming your way, let me give you a  little background first. No, I haven't changed, but you still have to be up to date with me, so here it is.      My name is Charlize, but you can call me Char. I'm a Scorpio, but not too into all of that horoscope stuff. I love watching soccer and idolize Messi but, I also play the sport myself, as a right back defender. I'm Peruvian from both part of my parents and love to embrace my culture. While my ambitions are constantly changing, I currently aspire to become a producer or work in some area of film production in a leadership role. My academic success means everything to me, and while I am my biggest supporter, I am also my biggest hater. I love to bake pastries such as cakes, cookies, cinnamon rolls, muffins, pionono (a Peruvain dessert), etc. I also love

Critical Creative Questions We Should Talk About

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1EnzSi5SCTtO2ZHtE6075Ytzd2tAidukDbYWyX-ucaB8/edit How does your product use or challenge conventions AND how does it represent social groups or issues? It goes without saying that my group and I had to face many challenges throughout this whole project. Valentina was hospitalized and while we did get an extension, it was very stressful to come up with our own dates to get stuff done and to get enough time to film. Everyone in our class had already finished their music video and was ready to start the next project when we still weren’t able to film. It was a lot to take into account and it was starting to get extremely stressful the less time we had to turn it in. Thankfully though, Valentina got better and we got to filming and editing as soon as possible. Our group got through this obstacle and we did the best we could to make the music video good but fun too. The actual music video, though, represents social groups and issues through the plot. While

Hey, Sappies. It's me, Char. I know I sort of left you midway through the editing process in my blog... So I'm here to make things right. Today we'll be getting into the scene editing portion of the music video. So first off, Valentina and I had to decide what clips we wanted to use for the music video. We checked with Sabrina on which clips we should keep and which ones we should lose. We decided to get rid of a soccer scene, gift scene, and conversation scene. This means six clips weren't included since each scene was filmed twice with both Sabrina and I. The reason we filmed each scene twice, the exact same concept, with different girls was because we wanted to give the impression that Parker was playing Sabrina and I in the exact same way. We decided to keep our beginning scene of a 'get ready with me' and clips of Sabrina and I getting gifts and boba from Parker, walking with him, playing football with him, and writing in our diaries about him. We tried to

I'm back! Once again, I know you missed me! How have you been, Sappies? I'm sure now that you've seen I've blogged, you feel ten times better. I just have that effect on people, I know. This time I'll be taking you guys through the editing process.  So starting off, we had to figure out who was going to be in charge of what. It was sort of complicated to since I really wanted to edit, but so did Valentina. But then, it was also a group project so, Sabrina had to help as well. In the end though, we decided that Valentina and I would edit together at her house and that we would send updates and questions about specific edits to Sabrina so that she could have a part too. Okay, so now time to edit.  We decided from the beginning that we would choose This Love by Maroon 5 as our song choice. But we also decided that for the plot we wanted, a specific verse would fit best. The only problem was that that verse was too into the song for our music video to be a maximum of t

Hey, Sappies, I know you missed me! We got to film again, and this time at Holiday Park. Except...there's something I have to confess. We had the time and, we decided to film the rest of our scenes in one day. Which, is actually okay considering that we got to edit quicker and get our video done before Thanksgiving Break.  We filmed the scenes that had to do with our love interest, Parker. Valentina was in charge of filming and directing us like she had on our previous filming day. At Holiday, we went through filming back and forth with Sabrina, Parker, and I. So that way we got the same scenes done quicker. The first scene we filmed was one walking with Parker, but since it looked kind of awkward, we didn't include it. Most of the scenes were filmed at Holiday, but a few were filmed at Kung Fu Tea. Kung Fu Tea is a boba shop across from Holiday Park that we thought would make a cute date scene. The first scene we filmed at Holiday was Sabrina and I walking with Parker. Then we
