Critical Creative Questions We Should Talk About
How does your product use or challenge conventions AND how does it represent social groups or issues?
It goes without saying that my group and I had to face many challenges throughout this whole project. Valentina was hospitalized and while we did get an extension, it was very stressful to come up with our own dates to get stuff done and to get enough time to film. Everyone in our class had already finished their music video and was ready to start the next project when we still weren’t able to film. It was a lot to take into account and it was starting to get extremely stressful the less time we had to turn it in. Thankfully though, Valentina got better and we got to filming and editing as soon as possible. Our group got through this obstacle and we did the best we could to make the music video good but fun too. The actual music video, though, represents social groups and issues through the plot. While I was talking to my aunt about this project, she explained to me how when she was 19, she lived in Peru and her and her best friend were getting played by some guy they both knew in Switzerland. They didn’t know it was the same guy until he came to visit them both in Peru, even though he knew they were best friends. This music video represents real life situations and addresses and raises awareness about the fact that this is a possible situation for people to be in, men and women.
How does your product engage with audiences AND how would it be distributed as a real media text?
My group and I’s music video engages with the audience in many ways. Believe it or not, this is a universal experience and many people watching could feel seen or heard through the music video. It could also make them feel better about their situation. There’s no reason to be sad about a person who doesn’t treat you right, and so while this video had a sad message, we structured it to be fun to film but also entertaining, enjoyable, and funny for our audience. Such as the scene where we beat up Parker and show him helpless on the ground. It’s funny because it’s the last thing one would expect. You’d expect a fight, not girls uniting. This brings me to the real media text of the video. It’s text is that we shouldn’t take these ‘situationships’ to heart, because it really won’t matter in five years. Instead of finding the worst in this kind of scenario. Sabrina and I found each other and realized that the bad guy in all of this was Parker and not either of us.
How did your production skills develop throughout this project?
My production skills developed throughout this project through filming and editing. While Valentina did film, I helped on a few scenes by giving suggestions on angles. Such as Sabrina’s walking scene with Parker and the diary scenes. I thought it would be best to have set-ups for out camera so that it wouldn’t be shaky when we filmed and so that it would be in the same spot each time. Valentina agreed and so we went with that. Editing wise, while I have used audios before in editing videos, I had never edited an audio from the beginning of the song to cutting it straight to another part in the song. Fading in and out was nothing compared to this. I am a perfectionist and so I spent a WHILE trying to get this audio to be perfect. And I’m proud to say that I did. If I worked on it a bit longer, it definitely would’ve been better, but you really can’t hear the cut from beginning to middle and that’s what I was going for. I got so excited when I finally got it, and if my group and I decide to do something similar in the future, it’s a helpful skill to have handy.
How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware and online – in this project?
My group and I integrated technologies into this project through the editing softwares CapCut and Movavi. I used CapCut to edit the audio and Valentina and I used Movavi to edit the music video. While CapCut was easy to use, Movavi wasn’t. It’s a really good and professional editing program that Valentina’s dad uses for his job. So figuring out how to use it was kind of difficult. We had to call her dad for help a few times so he could help us figure some stuff out. I think it was a good choice to use it though since it has more professional features than CapCut does since her dad pays for Premium.
