Movie Conventions Blog: The Killer

  Movie: The Killer (2023)

1. What conventions of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does the movie have?

The movie “The Killer” uses many conventions of the thriller genre, including multiple different types of angles, such as high angles, low angles, and eye-level angles. The types of shots in this movie include: full body, medium shot, over the shoulder, close-up, bird’s eye view, wide shot, etc. It uses “suspense music” (sound motif), diegetic sound, and ambient sound. The editing includes fade in/ fade out, transitions, insert, etc. The mis-en-scene in this movie varies, but generally includes natural makeup and casual clothing, and dim lighting when inside buildings.

2. What conventions of the genre did the movie have the you like?

We liked many conventions of the genre that the movie did. We plan on using fully body shots, wide shots, medium shots, and over the shoulder shots. These shots are great at displaying a setting while something is happening, and will be really useful in our stalker story. We also liked the use of sound motif. Having good themes to play in the background during the credits and important events is important in immersing the audience. Something that’s not commonly used in this genre but is used in the movie is voiceover, and we plan to include that as well.

3. What conventions of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you and you are thinking of not filming for your final task?

One thing that the movie included that did not appeal to us was a bird’s eye view. Although it suited the movie, it does not fit into our vision for our final task. Furthermore, it’s too difficult to shoot as we do not have a drone or a way to film something from so far above.
