Short Film Research: Of Gods & Pens/Thriller

 Common Sounds in Sci-Fi/Thriller:

  • Minimalistic or Ambient soundscapes: Often sparse with ambient sounds (wind, water, footsteps, etc.) enhancing the mood.
  • Diegetic sound: Sounds that are natural to the world of film (dialogue, sounds of nature..) creating a sense of realism.
  • Non-diegetic soundMusic or soundtracks that emphasize emotional tones.
  • Silence: Often used for introspective moments or to draw attention to a characters isolation or internal conflict.
Common Mis-En-Scene (CLAMPS):
  • Costume: Realistic, understated, reflecting emotional states.
  • Lighting: Soft, low-key or high-contrast for mood.
  • Acting: Subtle, restrained performances.
  • Makeup: Minimal, enhancing realism
  • Props: Symbolic, deepening themes.
  • Setting: Meaningful often reflection isolation or introspection
Common Editing:
  • Slow-paced: Allows reflection and emotional depth
  • Long takes: Builds tension and emotional connection
  • Non- Linear: Jump cuts or fragmented storytelling to reflect inner experiences.
Example Films:

  • "The Tree of Life" (2011)
  • "A Ghost Story" (2017)
  • "Moonlight" (2016)
  • "Her" (2013)
  •
    What I like:
    • Emotional depth
    • Visual aesthetics
    • Character driven
    What Doesn’t appeal to me:
    • Slow pacing
    • Ambiguity
    • Minimal plot
    • Excessive symbolism
